We operate 264 trains across 16 lines, 227 stations and over 1000 kilometres of track, seven days a week.
Metro has over 7,000 employees across diverse locations, from train drivers and signallers to station staff and corporate office workers. We strive to represent the community we serve and are proud to have one of the largest groups of female drivers in the world.
Together, we work as one team to deliver safe, reliable train services, and an exceptional passenger experience for all Victorians and visitors to Melbourne. We maintain and renew the railway network to ensure assets are safe and operate reliably.

Our Shareholders
Metro is a consortium of highly experienced rail and construction businesses. The Metro team draws on the strengths of three leaders of the rail industry: MTR Corporation, John Holland Group and UGL Transport.
These shareholders have a long and successful history of working together, bringing their expertise to both local and international rail industry projects. These include: the operation of entire rail systems; the successful delivery of long-term service supply agreements covering rolling stock supply, maintenance and refurbishment; rail infrastructure maintenance and renewals; and the delivery of major capital works programs.

MTR has extensive end-to-end railway expertise with more than 40 years of railway projects experience from design to planning and construction, through to commissioning, maintenance, and operations. Going beyond railway delivery and operation, MTR also creates and manages dynamic communities around its network through seamless integration of rail, commercial and property development.

John Holland operates Australia’s largest privately owned rail maintenance and construction plant and equipment fleet. With expertise in design, construction and maintenance of track, and installation and maintenance of both overhead traction and signalling systems, John Holland has successfully delivered projects around Australia, as well as carrying out major works on Melbourne’s existing rail network.

UGL Transport is a vertically integrated rail, transport and technology business owned in a 50/50 joint venture with the Sojitz Corporation and the CIMIC Group. UGL Transport designs, manufactures, maintains, and rebuilds rolling stock; operates and maintains transport networks; and designs, delivers, operates, and maintains rail infrastructure, transport and train control systems, traction power, and critical communications. With a legacy of nearly 130 years beginning in Newcastle New South Wales, UGL Transport works across Australia, New Zealand and internationally.
