Welcome to the Metro Academy, an endorsed training provider for Queensland Rail and its contractors.

Metro Academy has established a dedicated training team in Queensland; delivering Rail Safety and Protection related courses and qualifications to Queensland Rail contractors. Your local trainers and assessors are highly qualified, having previously worked for Queensland Rail for 20 years. This enables experienced facilitation; offering the qualifications required by contractors undertaking activities within Queensland Rail’s corridor.

All Metro Academy trainers hold the current Certificate IV training and assessing qualification TAE40110, as well as relevant vocational qualifications and experience. Being connected to an operating railway system ensures their skills are current and proven in a railway environment.

Metro Academy has qualified learning practitioners and specialist training partners to deliver on all business requirements. These training programs we offer ensure organisations and participants will receive high quality learning that builds on existing knowledge, skills and is aligned to workplace requirements.

Trainer – Jason Loft

Jason Loft is our accredited Training Facilitator providing a high level of training to our Queensland based
customers. Following a 20 year career with Queensland Rail, Jason has gained extensive knowledge of the rail
industry, working in and around the rail corridor and tracks.

Jason’s initial role was as a Track Worker, based in Brisbane, within the busy suburban network. Along with his
passion for safety and a strong drive for excellence, Jason continued to enhance his qualifications and rail
experience within the far north region of Townsville. Jason serviced all regional areas for 15 years before
relocating to Rockhampton for 5 years during his role as a Training Officer, a High Performance Safety Coach and a
Senior Safety Advisor.

Since joining the team at Metro Trains in 2015, Jason has successfully completed the necessary training,
psychometric testing and medicals to enable him to professionally facilitate a range of courses to customers
requiring safe access to the rail corridor. Jason also facilitates similar training at our Metro Academy in South
Kensington, Melbourne, and within the Sydney area.

The experience Jason has gained over the years allows him to facilitate numerous levels of training to customers of
all levels in a professional and supportive manor, incorporating various training techniques to assist any
candidate’s literacy and numeracy.

Courses

The Metro Academy facilitates various high level and professional training courses in Queensland on a weekly
schedule. Courses vary from the basic entry level required to safely access the rail corridor, to protection officer
level training for multiple worksites.

*Please note that the prerequisites listed are specific to Queensland Rail.

Rail Safety Awareness

Target audience:

Workers who are required to access rail operations areas outside of the rail corridor as part of their role

Duration:

Online 1 Hour

Safely Access the Rail Corridor (SARC)

Target audience:

Workers who are required to regularly access the rail corridor as part of their role

Qualification / Competency:

On successful completion of this course learners will obtain a Queensland Rail enterprise qualification
as well as the following national units of competency:

  • TLIF2080 Safely access the rail corridor
  •  TLIW2001 Operate under track protection rules

Duration:

6 Hours

Assessment:

Assessment will be conducted using both theory and practical methods

Prerequisites:

NHS Category 3 Health Assessment

Communications

Target audience:

Workers who are required to communicate with Network Controllers, Rail Traffic Crew and other
workers within the Queensland Rail Network

Qualification / Competency:

On successful completion of this course learners will obtain a Queensland Rail enterprise
qualification as well as the following national units of competency

  • TLIE2007 Use communications systems

Lookout Working

Target audience:

Workers who are required to perform the role of a Lookout when lookout working is being used as
a protection method for a worksite

Qualification / Competency:

On successful completion of this course learners will obtain a Queensland Rail enterprise
qualification as well as the following national unit of competency:

  • TLIF2081 Perform lookout duties

4 Hours

Assessment:

Assessment will be conducted using both theory and practical methods

  • NHS Category 3 Health Assessment

Handsignaller

Target audience:

Workers who are required to warn and signal rail traffic using handsignaller equipment

Qualification / Competency:

On successful completion of this course learners will obtain a Queensland Rail enterprise
qualification as well as the following national unit of competency:

  • TLIF2082 Perform handsignaller duties

4 Hours

Assessment:

Assessment will be conducted using both theory and practical methods

Prerequisites:

  • NHS Category 1 Health Assessment
  •  Psychometric assessment for Handsignaller

In-field Protection (Formally Known as Per Way Protection)

Target audience:

Workers who are required to place stop boards to prevent the entry of rail traffic into
a worksite (except for rail traffic and/or track machines)

Qualification / Competency:

On completion of this course learners will obtain a Queensland Rail enterprise
qualification as well as the following national units of competency:

  • TLIW2039 Place and remove permanent way stop boards

Duration:

8 Hours

Clipping Points

Target audience:

Workers who are required to place or clip on point/s to prevent their movement in
emergencies and for the protection of a worker at a worksite

Qualification / Competency:

On successful completion of this course learners will obtain a Queensland Rail

  • TLIW2037 Clip and secure points

Rail Corridor Protection Officer (RCPO)

Target audience:

Any rail safety worker conducting the duties of a Rail Corridor Protection
Officer in the course of their job

  • TLIF3083 Conduct track protection assessment

Duration:

6 Hours

Protection Officer 1 (PO1)

Target audience:

Any workers who have the responsibility to assess, determine and implement
suitable trackside safety protection for themselves or workgroup

Qualification / Competency:

On successful completion of this course learners will obtain a Queensland
Rail enterprise qualification as well as the following national units of
competency:

  • TLIF3083 Conduct track protection assessment
  • TLIL3082 Implement absolute signal blocking
  • TLIE2029 Conduct workplace information briefings
  • TLIE2008 Process workplace documentation

Fatigue Management

Target audience:

Workers engaged to undertake work on Queensland Rail’s network.

  • TLIF2010 Apply fatigue management strategies

Training Location

Our Training Room has all the required training aids and facilities to enable a comfortable environment for our customers. During full day courses, Metro Academy provides a nutritional lunch from a local caterer. Participants are also provided with tea, coffee or juice.

The location utilised allows participants to experience the true running and operation of the rail network has it happens. All safety procedures are adhered to prior to any participant entering the rail corridor as part of the practical applications required during various courses.

Our training location is easily accessible by train as it is adjacent to the Sandgate Railway Station and Curlew St Road level crossing.

There is also ample car parking available for participants travelling by car.
