Metro is the name of Melbourne's metropolitan rail service. Melbourne’s metropolitan train network operates 203 six-carriage trains across 830 kilometres of track.
The train fleet covers more than 45 million kilometres per year servicing more than 230 million customer journeys. The Metro train network has 15 lines, 215 train stations and a loyal workforce of 4,200 rail professionals including train drivers, mechanical and electrical engineers, network operations specialists and customer service representatives.
Metro will meet Melbourne's transport needs with unprecedented efficiency by synchronising the train system with the community's vibrant, diverse and ever evolving lifestyles.
With around 415,000 customers using the train service each day, Metro is a crucial part of Victoria’s 21st century social and economic fabric.

Metro is operated by a company called Metro Trains Melbourne or Metro. Metro is a consortium of rail and construction businesses all of which have unrivalled credentials.
The Metro team draws on the strengths and experience of three leading rail industry organisations including Hong Kong's MTR Corporation and Australia's John Holland Group and UGL Rail, a division of United Group Limited.
Metro brings extensive local and international experience to Melbourne including a long and successful history of the three shareholders working together on rail industry projects in Asia and Australia.
The team's combined experience includes the operation of entire rail systems, the successful delivery of long term service supply agreements covering rolling stock supply, maintenance and refurbishment, rail infrastructure maintenance and renewals, and the delivery of major capital works programs.

MTR Corporation
Hong Kong is recognised as one of the world’s leading railways for safety, efficiency, reliability, and customer service moving around 3.7 million passengers daily with a 99%+ on-time reliability. MTR has a wealth of experience in railway operations, maintenance and construction and will bring this expertise to Melbourne’s rail network.
Awarded the best metro in the Asia Pacific at the MetroRail 2008 Awards, MTR is investing in the construction and operation of several metro lines in major cities in the mainland of China. In 2007, it took over the Franchise for the London Overground rail network and was recently awarded the Concession to operate the Stockholm Metro system.
MTR has a market capitalisation of more than AUD$20 billion and an annual turnover in excess of AUD$2.5 billion.
John Holland
John Holland operates Australia’s largest privately owned rail maintenance and construction plant and equipment fleet. With expertise in design, construction and maintenance of track, and installation and maintenance of both overhead traction and signalling systems, John Holland has successfully delivered projects around Australia as well as carrying out major works on Melbourne’s existing rail network.
John Holland currently employs over 5,000 people on more than 150 projects.

UGL Rail
UGL Rail is a leading supplier to the rail sector, providing complete rail solutions that include asset management and maintenance of rail networks, infrastructure and rolling stock design, engineering, manufacture and refurbishment. UGL Rail has been heavily involved in maintaining Melbourne’s rail assets for the past eight years and understands well the challenges facing Melbourne’s system into the future.
