Rail Awareness & Safety Education – Session Types

Audience: Years 1 & 2

Introducing Rail Safety

Number of students and time: Up to 30 students and runs for 50 minutes.
Content: Activity based incursion to introduce students to rail safety features, Authorised Officers and the history of Flinders Street Station.

Learning outcomes
1. Identify Authorised Officers
2. History of Flinders Street Station
3. Locate emergency assistance buttons
4. Use level crossings safely

Audience: Years 3 & 4

Responsible Rail Safety

Number of students and time: Up to 30 students and runs for 50 minutes.
Content: Interactive incursion for students to recognise their responsibility in rail safety, and learn more about the role of Authorised Officers.

Learning outcomes
1. Identify safe travel behaviour and expectations
2. Understand the role of Authorised Officers on public transport
3. Safely use level crossings

Audience: Years 5 & 6

Owning Rail Safety

Number of students and time: Up to 30 students and runs for 50 minutes.
Content: Interactive incursion for students to identify the purpose of rail safety features and behaviours, and use problem solving to address challenges.

Learning outcomes
1. Recognise Authorised Officers, PSO’s, and Police on public transport
2. Access emergency assistance buttons while travelling
3. Understand passenger rights and responsibilities
4. Personal pledge to be safe around trains

Audience: Year 6 offered in term 4 only

Independent Travel

Number of students and time: Up to 30 students and runs for 50 minutes.
Content: Practical incursion for students to explore Myki and planning journeys on public transport.

Learning outcomes
1. Calculate the cost of a suitable myki product
2. Plan journeys using PTV journey planner
3. Seek emergency assistance while travelling
4. Frequently asked questions

Audience: Secondary students enrolled in a City Experience Program

City Experience Information

Time: Sessions run for up to 45 minutes

Content: Practical incursion for students to explore Myki and planning journeys on public transport.

3. Responsibilities when using public transport
