Our Metro Journeys, a Celebration of Inclusion
Our Metro Journeys, a Celebration of Inclusion
For aspiring actor and student Lukas Duffy, travelling on public transport is ‘a pilgrimage’ to the life he is building – work placements, theatre opportunities and study.
Lukas is a student at Melbourne Polytechnic, undertaking a Work Education qualification designed for people with an intellectual disability, autism, or cognitive impairment.
During this course, he has worked closely with Metro’s Community Education team, developing skills in journey planning, using the PTV app, and managing myki cards. Lukas says public transport is “always there for you”.

“It’s not just travel, but life experiences,” he said. “With the skills I learnt, I created an itinerary on PTV journey planner for a two-hour trip to Baccus Marsh for an audition to be in a play and I got the part.”
Metro’s partnership with Melbourne Polytechnic emphasises our commitment to inclusivity, building independence and community engagement.

Our Metro Journeys, was an event celebrating the contributions and stories of people with disabilities in our community. It showcased student work created during the semester, inspired by their participation in the Community Education program.
It featured a theatrical piece, a filmed montage of interviews on travel training, train-themed visual art, and student-led hospitality and catering. This special event was an opportunity to reflect on the impact we’ve made together, celebrate inclusion and diversity, and spark inspiration for what lies ahead.
