Mums help keep our network moving

8 May 2026, Jordan Gilliland

This Mother’s Day, Metro is taking the time to acknowledge the mums who help keep our network moving every day.

Amanda

East Malvern Station Officer Amanda remembers a time when her two daughters would phone her up to ask questions when they first started at Metro. Jordy and Darci are also Station Officers, but Amanda finds she is the one phoning them now.

With their rostering it is sometimes difficult to meet altogether, but when they do they love to talk about trains – as Amanda’s husband and son both work for V/Line.

“It’s lovely, because we have even more in common to talk about,” said Amanda.

Jordy said her mum would do anything for the girls. “If there’s anything we’re unsure about in life work – it’s straight to Mum.”

Amy

Amy is in the early stages of her time at Metro having just completed her 12 months of training to become a driver. Amy was encouraged by her husband Simon who has been a driver at Metro for 13 years to apply to become one, believing her to have the right attributes to drive on the network.

Encouraged and supported by her four children aged between 8 and 15 as well as her husband, Amy went through the months of study and testing to become a fully qualified driver on the network.

“Every time I would go off of an assessment my daughter would draw me a picture wishing me good luck,” Amy said.

“They always knew I needed to study so would leave me in peace when I was in my room studying away.”

Amy loves to be at her kids sporting events and is excited that her flexible work arrangements being a driver will allow her to attend them on weekends and be home for her kids.

Tracey

Tracey’s rail journey began in 1985 as a Station Assistant at Rosanna. Now driving trains, she has inspired her daughter Danielle to follow in her footsteps.

Danielle began driving in 2023 creating a mother-daughter-duo for Metro.

Rail is in the family DNA with Tracey’s husband and son both driving for V/Line, and her family tree boasting an impressive 19 people who worked in public transport.
