Bruce and Monique  

Father-daughter drivers Bruce and Monique are second and third generation railway people with 41 and 16-years’ experience respectively. 

Monique said growing up her dad’s colleagues were like family, making the railways an exciting place for her to work.  

“We would always have barbecues and events with drivers when I was a kid, the railways were like a big family,” she said. 

The pair said they really enjoy seeing each other at work but unfortunately for Monique, this won’t happen any longer as Bruce is hanging up his keys and retiring.  

“I always had a lot of pride in my work and loved what I did, but other drivers always said I will know when it’s time to finish up,” Bruce said. 

“After both my parents were on the railways, I was very reluctant to join but after my last job closed down I started as a locomotive assistant and I have been on the railways ever since.” 

While he will miss seeing his daughter around the network, Bruce is excited to get out with his caravan and never again use an alarm clock. 

Ralph 

Ralph from our Projects team spends his days improving our stations, but last year he delivered something a little different than a station upgrade.  

In October 2025,  Ralph’s wife went into labour with their second child. Their first child took 24 hours, so the pair believed they had plenty of time to get to the hospital. This was not the case…

Ralph quickly dialled triple zero and an ambulance was dispatched, but it was up to him to work with his wife to deliver their baby.  

Luckily he had paid close attention during the birth of his first born! He knew what he needed to do and helped deliver a healthy baby. 

Ralph said the big learning he took from this experience was the importance of going to hospital even after a home birth as his wife needed additional care at the hospital that could have been life threatening. 

Ralph is back at work in our Projects division helping improve stations across our network, his two children are happy and healthy, and he has a remarkable story to tell.

Geoff and David 

Our father and son duo Geoff and David Jacks have 83 years’ experience between them on the Victorian railways. 

Geoff has worked at every station on our network, including stations that no longer exist. His favourite remains Museum Station (now Melbourne Central). He now prepares our station rosters, including Pakenham Station, where his son David is a Senior Station Master. 

Geoff and David have worked together on rosters and both have a talent for detail. 

Geoff thinks the best thing about working together at Metro is he is able to throw problems at each other without any judgement.  

David is always appreciative of Geoff’s support and advice as David worked his way up to a Senior Station Master.
