Hip hip hooray, it’s Evie and Evette’s birthday!

They don’t appear on timetables, carry passengers or make daily commutes, but they’re among the hardest-working rolling stock on Melbourne’s railway.

This year, EV120, affectionately known as ‘Evie’, is celebrating her fifth birthday, while her electric-powered partner ‘Evette’ marks her first year in service.

Together, the pair travel across Victoria’s rail network collecting critical information to help Metro monitor rail infrastructure, identify potential issues early and plan maintenance works that keep trains running safely and reliably.

Since joining Metro’s fleet in 2021, Evie has become one of the network’s most important tools for monitoring rail infrastructure. Equipped with advanced technology, she measures information like track geometry and clearances, while also capturing imagery of tracks, overhead infrastructure and the driver’s view across the network. The data collected helps Metro make evidence-based decisions about maintenance and renewal works.

Capable of operating across both Metro and V/Line’s rail networks, Evie works an important role that most passengers will never see, but one that plays an important part in keeping trains moving every day.

Last year, Evie gained a new running mate – Evette, a modified three-car Comeng train transformed to haul EV120 across the electrified network.

Before Evette entered service, EV120 relied on diesel locomotives to haul her. By replacing diesel haulage with an electric alternative, Metro reduced emissions while creating opportunities to operate more efficiently across the network.

To mark Evie’s fifth birthday and Evette’s first year in service, Metro employees came together to celebrate two unique rail vehicles that have become an important part of the network. Thank you to this amazing duo!
