AusRAIL – Evaluation Vehicle 120 (EV120)

AusRAIL – Evaluation Vehicle 120 (EV120)

30 Oct 2025, James Ireland

Join Metro Trains experts at our AusRAIL Plus stand to learn more about our Evaluation Vehicle, also known as Evie, from 2.30pm to 3.00pm each day of the conference (26-28 November).

Evie is a custom-built track and overhead recording vehicle that independently measures and assesses track geometry, rail profile and structure clearances. Evie is hard to miss, with her vibrant yellow colour making her an icon of our railway!

Manufactured near Milan, Italy, Evie was officially added to Metro’s fleet in late 2021, after a ten-week ocean voyage to Melbourne. Evie superseded two older vehicles which required much more manual intervention, and did not capture as many different types of data.

Evie captures track, overhead component and driver view imagery across our network. The huge amount of data that is generated helps Metro make evidence-based decisions for planning track and overhead maintenance and renewal works. According to EV120 Production Manager Danny Haley, Evie has had a massive impact on the Infrastructure teams ability to gain insight into the condition of the network.

Evie travels on all broad-gauge tracks right across Victoria, including our metropolitan network as well as V/Line’s regional network. She is 20 metres long, 2.8 metres wide, weighs around 50 tonnes and can continue her measurement functions at up to 120 kilometres per hour!
