AusRAIL – Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

30 Oct 2025, James Ireland

Join Metro Trains experts at our AusRAIL Plus stand to learn more about our approach to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, from 3.30pm to 4.00pm each day of the conference (26-28 November).

At Metro, diversity, equity and inclusion are more than just values, they’re essential to creating a workplace where everyone feels they belong and can thrive. Embracing diversity and fostering inclusion is essential to Metro becoming a world-class railway for Melbourne.

We believe that a respectful, diverse and inclusive workplace drives innovation and collaboration, supports employee health and wellbeing and strengthens our ability to serve our diverse communities.

Earlier this year, we launched our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Strategy, and alongside our Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy, they outline our commitment to building a safer, healthier and more inclusive workplace.

Our DEI Strategy is shaped by the voices and lived experiences of our people. It recognises that Metro is made up of individuals with diverse identities and perspectives—and that listening, learning, and acting on what matters to them is key to building an inclusive workplace.

Over the next three years, our DEI Strategy will guide us in continuing to shape a workplace that reflects the communities we serve, foster a culture where everyone feels safe to be themselves, and ensures our systems and processes are fair, accessible, and free from bias.

We’re launching initiatives that make a real difference, including:

  • Delivering Metro’s first DEI Survey and Gender Equality Workplace Audit to better understand our culture and drive meaningful change.
  • Promoting inclusion through seeking Menopause Friendly Accreditation, implementing a Gender Equity Action Plan and strengthening our workplace conduct and recruitment policies, procedures and practices.
  • Upskilling our leaders to embed equity into every decision they make.
  • Supporting our Gender, First Nations, Disability, Lived Experience and LGBTQ+ employee networks to grow into powerful voices for change

Our strategies aren’t just documents: they are about people, culture, and creating a workplace where everyone feels supported and has a sense of belonging.

Our people come from all walks of life, and that’s our strength. Diversity and inclusion don’t happen by chance, they happen by design.
