We sincerely apologise for the major delays and disruptions experienced across the network this morning.
A faulty overhead power line caused a power outage between Southern Cross and Flinders Street stations, severely limiting the amount of trains we could move through that section.
The resultant congestion caused major delays and cancellations on all train lines, while emergency repair works were undertaken.
We know the overhead wires are a critical piece of our infrastructure which is why we are working hard with the ongoing upgrade and maintenance of our overhead power supply across the network.
So far, we have replaced more than 17km of overhead wires at critical locations across the network, including the Werribee/Williamstown, Sydenham, Craigieburn, Upfield, Epping, Belgrave/Lilydale, Glen Waverley and Frankston lines. The large size and scale of the Melbourne network means that this is a time-consuming task and we still have more work to do.
The volume of service disruptions also meant some of our electronic updates were delayed. We apologise to those customers who did not receive real-time information to help with their decisions around this mornings commute.
All Metro staff including customer service, maintenance and operations will continue to work hard to avoid further disruptions to customers during our investigation.
