Welcome to Metro and welcome to Melbourne
Melbourne is Australia's fastest growing city with more than 1,400 people choosing to move here every week.
Metro is Australia's busiest railway with around 2,200 services operated each weekday across 15 train lines. Melbourne’s Metro is one of the world’s largest above-ground railway networks and with 830kms of track, is comparable in size to the London Underground.
The railway has been experiencing considerable growth just like the city and is being transformed from a traditional suburban railway into a high-frequency, high capacity metro system designed for a growing city.

The challenge facing Metro
The challenges facing MetroMelbourne's first railway opened in 1854 and is now one of world's largest privately operated yet publically-owned railways.
Over past year, Melbourne's Metro has accommodated a record 222.3 million customer journeys – the highest in Melbourne's history.
This growth is expected to continue with patronage to double over the coming decade.
To facilitate this growth, Metro must transition from being a traditional suburban railway to becoming a high-capacity, high-frequency metro to rival the world's best.
Supported by the Victorian government, funding has been secured to commence the largest reconfiguration of Melbourne's railway undertaken in recent decades.
With 38 new six-carriage trains being delivered over the coming months, our aim is to fundamentally change the way Metro operates.
Around $600 million was invested in infrastructure renewal, major projects as well rolling stock reliability projects in the past year, with Metro having commenced one of the toughest challenges being faced by any railway operator in Australia.
To meet this challenge, we are inviting experienced railway professionals from all around the world to consider moving to Melbourne and join us for the journey of a lifetime.

Melbourne consistently ranks as one of the world’s most liveable cities.
Since 1835, Melbourne has developed into a sophisticated metropolis located on the banks of Port Philip Bay with the picturesque Yarra River winding its way through the heart of the city.
With an enviable temperate climate, in summer, residents of Melbourne have access to world-renowned surfing beaches while in winter, within a few hours, access can be gained to some of Australia's leading snowfields.
Traditionally, Melbourne has been known as the garden state with superb swathes of parks and gardens maintained throughout the city and its suburbs.
The gold rush of the 1850s propelled Melbourne into the industrial revolution where it established itself as Australia's manufacturing hub – a status it still retains.
With a growing population of four million, Melbourne is widely regarded as a centre for cultural and artistic endeavour having experienced enormous post-war migration from Europe and, more recently, from its Asian neighbours.
Melbourne is perhaps most famous for its major sporting events hosting the world famous Melbourne Cup, the Australian F1 Grand Prix, the Australian Open Tennis as well as being the traditional home of the Australian Football League.
Melbourne's population is growing at a rate of around 1,400 people a week with the city's population expected to grow to five million over the coming years.
As a consequence, Melbourne's metropolitan rail system is undergoing a renaissance where it is being transformed from a traditional suburban railway into a high-frequency, high-capacity metro system designed for a growing city.
The growth of this liveable city and its railway is presenting unique opportunities for railway professionals from all around the world.
