Information for First Time Users

Metro is the name of Melbourne's new metropolitan rail service.

The Metro train network has 15 lines and 211 train stations.  We carry around 400,000 customers a day with 149 six-carriage trains across 830 kilometres of track.

Accessing Melbourne’s comprehensive train network is simple – just follow these few steps.

1. Find your nearest station.

The Maps & Stations section of the Metro website has complete maps of Melbourne’s Metro or maps of the each Metro train line

2. Buy a ticket

Melbourne is progressively moving to a new ticketing system called myki and while this is happening you will notice two types of ticketing equipment on train, tram and bus networks.

Currently, you can use myki (or Metcard) on Metro trains.  Customers connecting to or from a tram or bus service should continue travelling with a Metcard.

For information on how to buy a myki, visit myki.com.au.

For more information on all public transport ticketing across Victoria (including how to buy a  Metcard) visit metlinkmelbourne.com.au.

3. Time of next arrival

Each train station has a Customer Information console containing a green and red button

When the green button is pressed, an automated broadcast will announce the time of the next arriving train and how many minutes remain until that train arrives

The red button is for emergencies only

4. All aboard!

When the next train arrives, either press the illuminated green button on the train door or open the door by the handle

Be aware of the small gap between the train and the platform

The train driver will close the doors automatically once you are safely onboard

5. Arriving at your destination

All trains automatically broadcast the name of the next station prior to its arrival

Most trains also have electronic signs which flash the name of the next station

Should either or both of these services be temporarily unavailable, look for on-board network maps to find your destination

6. Exiting a train

Similar to boarding a train, either press the illuminated green button on the train door or open the door by the handle

Mind the gap between the train and platform

The train driver will close the doors automatically once you are safely on the platform

7. Leaving the station

At larger stations, look for the exit barriers which open automatically when your Metcard is inserted or myki card is touched on/off.

For smaller stations, look for the stand-alone ticket readers as you leave.
