Fines – what to do?

Metro aims to provide clean, comfortable, safe and punctual rail travel.  In return, we expect our customers to buy a ticket.

It is an offence under the Victorian Transport Act to travel without a valid ticket.  In the event a customer fails to produce a valid ticket when requested by an authorised Metro employee, a Report of Non-Compliance can be issued.

A Report of Non-Compliance is NOT a fine.  The Report is reviewed by the Victorian Department of Transport which will then decide whether or not to issue an Infringement Notice which includes a notification of a fine.
If an Infringement Notice is issued, a customer has 42 days to pay or dispute the fine.

On any particular occasion, a customer may have a legitimate reason for not travelling with a valid ticket.  In the event an Infringement Notice has been issued and a customer wishes to dispute the infringement, the Notice of Infringement will clearly state the appropriate channel through which a dispute can be progressed.
