Metro’s performance results have been released, achieving a 99 per cent service delivery result, exceeding the target for the sixth month running. The punctuality result however, fell short of the 88 per cent target with 82.7 per cent of trains running on-time.

Metro’s April performance results have been released, with Metro exceeding its service delivery target for the fifth month in a row, delivering its best result since taking over the network – and the best result on the metropolitan network in almost a year – running 99.4 per cent of 53,791 scheduled services. On-time performance recorded an improvement on February and March figures with 84.5 per cent of trains running on time, but fell 3.5 per cent short of the 88 per cent target.
Metro’s recruitment drive for customer service staff and station staff is set to continue following the announcement of the 22 new stations to be staffed.
Metro will introduce 211 additional and extended weekly services as part of a new timetable to start from Sunday 6 June.
Metro exceeded its delivery target in March for the fourth month in a row, running 98.6 per cent of 55,956 scheduled services, despite a number of Siemens trains being out of service. “Despite fleet restrictions, we kept cancellations low by maintaining train availability at or above the required level during the peaks, which is 149 trains in morning peak and 144 trains required in afternoon peak,” said CEO Andrew Lezala.
Metro is tackling track improvements head on, with a 10-day rail grinding program now underway, and ballast (the rock that supports train tracks) replacement works completed during the weekend. Metro has secured the use of a switch grinder from Sydney’s CityRail – a brand new machine that has been used to grind up to 9.5km of track this week, to improve track adhesion, reduce wear, and make for a more comfortable ride.
More than 1,500 extra train services will carry more than 1.2 million people to and from the footy this year – that’s enough people to fill the MCG 12 times. Metro is gearing up for the footy season, adding extra trains for all major AFL matches being played in Melbourne this year, on top of its regular services.
The Burgundy Street railway bridge in Heidelberg is set to receive an upgrade with a new superstructure to be installed as part of Metro’s first year maintenance plan. A new steel superstructure – the term used for the top deck of the bridge – will be installed, replacing the existing top deck, as well as new ballast, concrete sleepers and rail.
Metro today released the details of its first year maintenance plan, an ambitious package of works that utilises $145 million of Government investment to improve signalling, track condition and overhead line.
