Travelling with a Pram - Important Safety Tips

28 May

Metro and Kidsafe Victoria urge parents and carers to be vigilant their children's safety at train platforms. Most accidents occur from:

  • Runaway prams in high winds after being left with their brakes off
  • Unrestrained babies spilling from prams falling between the train and platform
  • Children becoming separated from parents at stations

To ensure your child is always safe in their pram, make sure your child is always restrained in a 5 point harness, that the brake is applied if the pram is not in motion and that you use the attached wrist strap required in all new prams.

The following safety advice will also assist in making your travel more comfortable:

  • Ensure babies and toddlers in prams and strollers are properly restrained in a 5 point harness at all times
  • Always apply the brakes on your pram or stroller when the pram is stationary, particularly while waiting on platforms and when on trains.
  • Always keep one hand on your pram or use the supplied tether strap.
  • When waiting for a train, stand with your pram parallel to the tracks, behind the yellow line. Ensure the mobile front wheel is locked and fixed with three wheeled prams
  • Enter the train with the pram in front of you, lifting the front wheels.
  • Exit the train with the back wheel of the pram first
  • If you have another child or children with you, hold their hand and/or have them hold onto the pram
  • Prepare yourself to exit the train a few minutes before you reach your stop.
  • Travel in the front few closer to the driver and he will be more aware of you.
  • Ensure you keep your older children with you at all times, especially as you enter and exit the train. If you need any help, approach staff at the station or press the red emergency button
