Flinders Street Station turns 100

22 January

Flinders Street Station, one of the most recognisable buildings in Melbourne, is now 100.

January 22 marked the 100th birthday of the iconic train station.

The milestone event was celebrated by new Minister for Public Transport Martin Pakula and Metro staff including CEO Andrew Lezala.

Mr Lezala unveiled a commemorative plaque, as well as a special wall display showing images of the historic station that will feature throughout 2010.

He said it was important to acknowledge the historical past of such a building, but also both the future significance of what is the centre-point for public transport in Melbourne.

"We're proud to be celebrating the life of such an historic building, a building that is so important to Melburnians," Andrew said.

"We acknowledge not only the sentimental importance of the building, but also the valuable role it plays today.

"Flinders Street Station's 100-year history is overshadowed only by the vital role it currently plays for the more than 100,000 trips made through it each weekday.

"Metro is also excited about the opportunities for continued growing and improving with the station into the future."

The centenary was celebrated in style with a birthday cake, as well give-aways including commemorative bookmarks and coffee vouchers.
